Enjoy a visit to the historic North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club, located next to the Monmouth Boat Club on the Navesink River in Red Bank. The NSIBYC was founded in1880 and is theoldest ice boat club in the world, which has continuously occupied it’s own Clubhouse.
And what a Clubhouse! The ground floor is a shop where members work on their boats; from 6 foot “Icebirds” to the 50 foot Class 1 behemoth “Rocket”. Currently the workshop is filled with boats under repair, rebuilding and refinishing.
Upstairs the varnished tong and groove walls and ceiling are covered with historic photographs and memorabilia, from the Club’s earliest days to the present. Pictures of gaff rigged giants tothe futuristic “bubble boats” which look like jet planes on skates and are capable of 100mph plus.
There will be apresentation of Greg Strand narrating his illustrated video “History of IceBoating on the Hudson and Navesink Rivers” and slide show by Jeff Smith and others of the more modern boats.
The Club is located at the foot of Boat Club Way off of West Front Street next to the Monmouth Boat Club.
This presentation is made possible by Jeff Smith.
